How to apply as an international student
If you're keen to do a pathway, undergraduate or postgraduate (coursework) course, find out whether you're eligible and what the application process involves.
The following instructions are for pathway, undergraduate and postgraduate (coursework) applications only. If you’re applying for a Higher Degree by Research (HDR), follow the instructions on our Research page.

You must meet the minimum English language requirement. This varies between courses. Find out what applies to you by searching for your course and selecting ‘entry requirements’. If you don't meet the English language requirement, you may be eligible to enrol in our English for Academic Purposes course to improve your English skills.
You must be at least 18 years old when your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued.
Other eligibility requirements depend on what type of course you’re applying for.

Where to apply
Offshore applicants
If you’re from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda or Ghana, you must apply through a Federation agent. Direct applications from these countries will not be processed.
If you're not from any of the countries listed above, we'd still recommend you get a Federation agent to help with your application. However, you can apply directly to Federation if you'd prefer.
Onshore applicants
If you’re a VCE student, please apply via VTAC.
If you’re not currently doing VCE and don’t need any help, please apply directly to Federation by following the steps below.
How to apply directly to Federation
Register through StudyLink then pay your application fee and complete the application form. You'll be asked to attach certified copies of various supporting documents, as outlined below.
Application fee
You must pay AUD $25 up front for your application to proceed. This fee is not refundable, but it can be waived if you:
- have an eVoucher from an education expo
- are an existing Federation student applying to change courses
- are sponsored by the government of your home country or another foreign country
- are sponsored by an Australian federal, state or territory government
- are sponsored by a gazetted organisation (Rotary International, Red Cross, Ford Foundation) or other acceptable non-profit organisation
- apply through an authorised Federation agent.
Supporting documents
You must include:
- academic transcripts from all previous studies (provided in both the original language and English) which:
- list all subjects undertaken and grades achieved
- are printed on the official paper/letterhead of the institution
- are certified copies or verified digital academic statements
- graduation certificates / official awards (provided in both the original language and English) which state:
- the full title of the qualification
- the date of completion
- your name (printed on the official paper/letterhead of the institution)
- evidence that you meet the minimum English language requirement for your course (Academic IELTS results or equivalent)
- copies of your passport and all Australian visas (if applicable)
- Confirmation of Enrolments (CoEs) from any studies in Australia
- any other relevant documents you would like us to consider (e.g. letters from schools or employers, a statement of purpose or your CV/resume).
Certified copies
All supporting documents submitted with an application must be certified copies. This means a copy of an original document that has been verified (stamped and signed) as being a true copy by an authorised person.
The authorised person must, on ALL pages that contain information:
- stamp or write "This is a true copy of the document sighted by me."
- sign, date and provide contact details (name, address and phone number)
- use the official stamp or seal of their organisation, or their profession and organisation name.
Federation University will accept copies certified by anyone who is currently employed as:
- a registered Federation University agent
- an authorised officer from the institution that originally issued the documents
- an Australian overseas diplomatic mission or any Australian Education International.
If you're in Australia you can also use:
- an Australian justice of the peace
- an Australian accountant (who is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants, the National Institute of Accountants, the Association of Taxation and Management Accountants or Registered Tax Agents)
- an Australian bank manager (but not a manager of a bank travel centre)
- an Australian barrister, solicitor or patent attorney
- an Australian credit union branch manager
- an Australian commissioner for declarations
- an Australian medical practitioner (doctor)
- an Australian police officer in charge of a police station, or of the rank of sergeant and above
- an Australian postal manager
- an Australian pharmacist
- an Australian principal of a secondary college, high school or primary school.
Notarised documents (applicants from China only)
Notarised documents may be required if you're applying from China. We'll advise you after we receive your application if we require notarised copies of any documents.
Translated documents
All non-English documents must be translated into English. Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). Translators outside Australia must have all translated documents certified by a notary. These details must be in English.
Digital academic statements
If you completed your previous tertiary studies at an institution in Australia or New Zealand and you have a My eQuals account, you can provide your digital academic statements via the online platform.
- Log into your My eQuals account.
- Choose your documents and select "Share selected".
- Select "Send my documents to a registered organisation".
- Select "Federation University Australia" and fill out the required details.
- Submit.
If you've studied outside Australia or New Zealand and have been awarded your certified academic statements through Digitary CORE (in India, Ireland, Japan, Spain or UK), please follow the steps outlined above to share these statements.
If you have academic records from other countries and would like to provide digital statements (including documents translated into English), you can have these verified independently through Digitary VIA.
