How to apply for TAFE courses

If you’re a Year 12 student or applying to more than one institution, apply via VTAC. Otherwise, apply directly to Federation. It's easy, and you can do it all online.

Some TAFE courses have prerequisites, but many don’t. Search your specific course entry requirements to find out if you can apply. If you're an international student, you're not eligible to study at Federation TAFE – find out what you can apply for.

Where to apply

If you’re a Year 12 student or you’re applying to more than one institution, apply via VTAC.

If you want to start an apprenticeship or traineeship, find a job in your trade first. When you sign your training agreement, the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network will initiate your TAFE course application and enrolment.

If you’re not a Year 12 student and you’re applying only to Federation TAFE, do it directly.

How to apply directly to Federation

Make sure you have your personal details, work history and educational background (qualification titles, institutions and dates) ready before you start your application.

Your USI (Unique Student Identifier) is your individual education number for life. If you’ve studied in Australia since 2015, you’ll already have a USI. If you haven’t, you can create a USI online in a few minutes.

Follow the process on our application website. It should only take about 30 minutes. You’ll need to register with your personal email address (and – sorry – make up a new password).

You’ll need ONE of the following original documents:

  • Australian birth certificate (not birth extract)
  • current Australian passport
  • current New Zealand passport
  • current green Medicare card.

In the application portal, select Check the status of my application > See my to do list > Verify identity, then follow the instructions.

The Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) review is a short online assessment that helps us understand where you’re at (and if the course you’re applying for is a good fit). You don’t need to study for it.

In the application portal, select Check the status of my application > See my to do list > Language, Literacy and Numeracy, then follow the instructions.

If you’re under 17, we’ll email you an ‘Exemption from School’ form that your school principal must sign.

If you’re under 18, we’ll email you a parent/guardian consent form to fill out.

In the application portal, select Check the status of my application > See my to do list > Supporting documents, then follow the instructions.
