Course overview

The VCE Vocational Major (VM) is a dynamic, two-year vocational and applied learning program within the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). It is designed for students who thrive in hands-on, real-world learning environments and prefer practical pathways to further education, training, and employment.

Delivered at Federation College, VCE VM offers students a unique opportunity to complete their senior secondary education in a non-traditional, inclusive, and supportive setting. The program is tailored to meet the diverse needs of learners, allowing them to pursue their strengths and interests while developing the skills and capabilities essential for success in life beyond school.

Key Features of the VCE VM at Federation College:

Applied Learning Approach

Students engage in project-based learning that connects academic content with real-world applications. This fosters critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, while building confidence and independence.

The program places strong emphasis on developing transferable skills that are highly valued by employers, including:

  • Effective communication and teamwork
  • Problem-solving and initiative
  • Time management and organisational skills
  • Digital and financial literacy

Pathways to Future Success

The VCE VM prepares students for a variety of post-school options, such as:

Federation TAFE

I find TAFE is great because it's affordable. It's practical skills, hands on and it's easy to engage with the teachers because they're there if you have any questions; they really guide you through it. And it's a good adult learning environment."

Hear from our staff

Kelly Hart talks about what it's like studying a pathway course at Federation.

Hi, I'm Kelly Hart. I'm a lecturer in education. I teach across various education courses with our pre-service teachers as well as the Master of Specialist Teaching and the FAST program too. The FAST program is a one-semester pathway program and we help students prepare and learn everything that they need to know to succeed at university. I also provide English support sessions for our international students and that's actually part of what I love about all of our programs, just the level of support that we have for all our students. We have so many options to get help along the way through past sessions, peer mentors, studios, city writing space and learning skills advisors and so much more. So students always know there's plenty of support whenever they need it. And a fun fact about me, I lived in China for nine years and I speak fluent Mandarin.

Credit for previous study

You might be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) if you have formal or informal learning, or relevant experience that meets the requirements of your training package or VET accredited course. If you think you qualify for RPL, you can apply at the same time as you apply for your course.
