Course outline:
Develop your skills and knowledge for a career as a draftsperson. This qualification has been developed with the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industries.
The focus will be on strength calculations, material selection and design. What you will learn can be applied to other fields of study – e.g. civil, electrical etc.
As a student, you will be able to obtain a 1-year education licence to access Autodesk software – we consider AutoCAD Mechanical and Inventor Professional packages.
If you come on campus, you will be able to observe (and have limited access) to an engineering workshop equipped with industrial manual and automated machinery and testing equipment.

You can attend either attend in person at our SMB campus for face-to-face delivery, connect remotely to in-class lectures or watch recorded class sessions. Our online learning system enables you to study in a safe, guided and supported manner with the same access to all learning, personal and wellbeing supports.
Attending our SMB Campus will give you the best learning experience, however, study material including assessments are available online.
All students will need to attend at least half-a-day for one practical assessment in measuring.
Learning content is available online and can be completed remotely. However, learning is supported by teacher led classes delivered on campus. It is strongly recommended that you attend relevant classes in person for the best experience.
IT requirements

- Our Mt Helen, SMB, Camp St and Gillies St campuses are located in Ballarat.
- Online learning is only an option if you’re not studying on an international student visa.
Contact hours
Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30am to 4:30pm and on Wednesdays, from 1:30pm to 9:00pm.
You can attend either in person at our SMB campus for face-to-face delivery, or online via MS Teams to join remotely or watch recorded class sessions.
While attending classes at our SMB campus provides the best learning experience, all study materials, including assessments, are available online.
Please note that online learning is not self-paced and follows the scheduled class delivery times.
Additional study time is required to complete assessments, classroom readings and activities. We recommend approximately eight hours per week for these activities.
