Bachelor of Secondary Education (Applied Teaching)
The Bachelor of Secondary Education (Applied Teaching) will prepare you for a career as a teacher in Victorian secondary schools. Many secondary schools are currently struggling to find qualified teachers who are able to teach the new VCE (Vocational Major) and, with many teachers “teaching out of field” because of staff shortages, this is an in-demand qualification.
Your previous occupation, experience and qualifications will be assessed prior to admission into the program. In many circumstances, you will receive recognition for prior learning based on your experience and qualifications, enabling you to become a fully qualified VCE (Vocational Major) teacher in the either 24 or 30 months.

Course overview
The Bachelor of Secondary Education (Applied Teaching) will be delivered through a range of teaching approaches that model best practice in schools and will include a range of scaffolding techniques to assist performance. These include explicit teaching, collaborative learning, questioning, modelling, feedback, task management, and the use of metacognitive strategies.
The teaching approach is predominantly activity-based and collaborative, which enables you to engage with and explore issues related to developing positive learning environments in secondary school classrooms. It also models High Impact Teaching Strategies, which are used in secondary schools, and you will get the opportunity to practise during placements in secondary schools where the VCE Vocational Major is offered.
The course will be delivered through a blended model that utilises Federation’s well-supported, self-paced learning management system (Moodle) in conjunction with several face-to-face workshops during each year.
This course is unique to Federation University. One of the advantages of studying the Bachelor of Secondary Education (Applied Teaching) is access to Federation College where the VCE Vocational Major is delivered. This will assist you to understand how the VCE Vocational Major is run in schools.
Additionally, staff at Federation University are highly qualified teachers with most having taught in school settings. This enables staff to model appropriate teaching skills and strategies to give you a sense of what happens in a school setting.
Applicants who have not completed secondary education, or undertaken any TAFE or university studies will not be eligible for entry into this course. Applicants in this category should consider a pathway course such as Foundation Access Studies (FAST) Course.

The indicative fee above is based on a typical first-year enrolment for this course and should be used as a guide only. For 0.5 EFTSL (60 credit point) courses the certificate fee is displayed. Your fee will depend on the units you chose, your study load, the time it takes to complete your course and any approved credit you receive.
How it's calculated
The government sets the fee each year. The amount depends on the discipline area and band of each unit. 2026 annual student contribution amounts for 1 EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) range from $4,738 (Band 1) to $17,399 (Band 4). Hear from our students

Hi, my name is Maddie and I'm studying a Bachelor of Education. I'm specialising in inclusive Ed and I'm in my third year of studies. I chose to study at Fed Uni because it is close to home and because I had a few friends who were studying here as well. I would recommend federation to those considering studying because of the placement opportunities they have here. This year as part of my diversity placement I was given the opportunity to travel to the NT to a remote indigenous community. This option was available to all students in my degree in the third year and it was made even more accessible as the majority of the accommodation and flights were funded by the Uni Arunga. The community I was placed in was the most beautiful little community with wonderful students and incredible classroom facilities. I'm so glad and proud of myself for taking that leap of faith because now I have so many more skills and experiences under my belt. This opportunity will be something I'll happily share with anyone and we'll think about forever. I really couldn't recommend this programme more.
