SCCOR3002 Science Communication Project

This unit provides students with an opportunity to do deep research on a topic related to a major area of study, while building professional skills in scientific communication and project management. Students' work independently on their chosen communication topic with support from academic advisors. Student's will learn how to define their communication issue and target audience, to develop a well justified project proposal, including background on the topic and a detailed project plan, culminating in the delivery of the final communication task, and executive summary. The format of the final communication task is flexible and students play a lead role in deciding what approach to take - some possible examples include a comprehensive scientific evaluation and report, a series of lessons for school students, a detailed how-to guide for a relevant process, a video explainer or podcast, a science news style article, a written information booklet/poster or e-book, or social media campaign or blog post. Students largely work independently but are required to maintain regular contact with academic advisors. Attendance at online workshops may be required, and oral and written communication will be assessed.
