Hear from our staff

Professor Doctor Mohammed Aziz Rahman talks about postgraduate study in public health.

Hello, my name is Professor Doctor Mohammed Aziz Rahman, and I'm the discipline leader of public health. My favourite part of this program is the rich diversity of our students who come from multidisciplinary backgrounds and international settings. They bring their local experience to correlate this with public health theories and contexts of Australian settings. One of the bids for public health is that it is perceived as the program for anyone having a health background only, such as doctors or nurses. But that's not correct. People from multidisciplinary background can bring their background knowledge and experience to think differently about any public health issue and ways to resolve this. Students develop their research skills in the first year and have the practical experience of conducting a small-scale research on a public health topic in the second year under the guidance of an experienced supervisor. Such experience of research is critical for students considering further study to complete a PhD or work in academia or research organisations. What makes our program stand out is the opportunity for students to decide on a specific specialisation at the end of first year when they can make informed decision instead of deciding at the beginning of the program. The block mode of face-to-face teaching achieves work-study balance and that is close contact with the facilitators due to the small cohort of students. A fun fact about myself: on any first session of my teaching, many students consider me as a scary teacher, but their attitude changes completely when they interact with me in the class and discover that I'm easily approachable any time.
