Life at Federation
Starting uni might feel like a big change, especially if you've had a break from study. But we think you'll like life at Fed – the academic side and the social side.
This is uni
If you’ve never done any tertiary study before, you might be wondering what uni life will actually be like. Here’s the gist: You’ll have tutes, labs and lectures (if you’re higher ed) and classes (if you’re at TAFE). You’ll access resources online. You might do placement (work experience). And you should expect to do homework or assignments outside class times. But uni’s not just about study – the social side is huge. Embrace it.
Hear from our students

Hi, my name is Mitchell. I'm a third-year criminology student at Federation Berwick. I chose to study criminology and criminal justice because I was interested in law but I wasn't overly sure if I was going to do a law-based degree. So my careers are counsellor at school advised me about Federation and knowing that me as a student struggled with the bigger classrooms. Federation offers a better learning environment with smaller classrooms and a more personal appropriate teachers and that's something that I think to really help me develop as a student. I'm also a student ambassador which helps me to create a more personal relationship with my teachers where we have a first name basis and they understand who I am as a student, which allows them to obviously provide like better opportunities for me to learn and grow. And a fun fact about me is that I play basketball for Federation in the Nationals team, so we go to the Gold Coast to play basketball.
Events and activities
We don’t expect you to study all the time. Breaks are important. Socialising is good for the soul. That’s why we run heaps of campus events and activities. And most of them are free.
Living on campus
Living on campus is fun. Sometimes too fun, if you catch our drift. But tell your parents that according to research, res students are more likely to be successful in their studies.
Financial assistance
Financial and health struggles are real, but so are our support services. Paying your rent on time, looking after your mental wellbeing, eating on a budget. And trying to study. It’s a lot. We’re here to help.
Academic support
Getting the grades you want is absolutely possible. Especially if you speak to our Learning Skills Advisors, join a study group, attend our academic skills workshops and access our 24/7 feedback service.
